href=\"\/en\/about-us\/bibliography\/#31\">31<\/a><\/sup> identifies the following characteristics as indicators of problematic engagement with the manosphere (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcu.ie\/antibullyingcentre\/addressing-impact-masculinity-influencers-teenage-boys\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">see publication<\/a>):<\/p><ul><li>\u201cMasculinity\u201d is treated as a rigid checklist that legitimises, encourages or even demands male dominance, entitlement and violence.<\/li><li>Men\u2019s emotions and vulnerabilities are devalued. Stoicism, toughness and emotional detachment are idealised. Andrew Tate, for example, explicitly encourages the suppression of feelings through willpower. This is not sound advice: emotional suppression weakens psychological resilience and mental health and is associated with increased suicide risk.<\/li><li>Male success is equated with wealth and material possessions. Boys and men without money or status symbols such as expensive clothing, cars or property are framed as failures.<\/li><li>Academic effort and achievement are portrayed as \u201cunmanly\u201d, and schooling is dismissed as a waste of time, which may undermine motivation and performance.<\/li><li>Boys adopt sexist and misogynistic rhetoric from online influencers, make derogatory remarks about women and sexualise the appearance of girls and women. Discriminatory, often violent and hateful language normalises prejudice and devaluation.<\/li><li>Masculinity is presented as inseparable from heterosexual orientation. This reinforces <span class=\"tooltip-word\">heteronormativity<span class=\"tooltip-box\"><strong>Heteronormativity:<\/strong> Heteronormativity refers to the societal assumption that men desire women and women desire men. Other forms of desire are framed as deviations and have historically been pathologised. Heteronormativity is closely linked to homophobia. <\/span><\/span> and can fuel <span class=\"tooltip-word\">homophobia<span class=\"tooltip-box\"><strong>Homophobia:<\/strong> Homophobia refers to fear of, aversion to or hostility towards homosexual people.<\/span><\/span> and hostility towards gay men.<\/li><\/ul><p>Some manfluencers promote the idea that a \u201creal man\u201d must have sexual relations with as many women as possible. A counter-narrative also exists: a \u201creal man\u201d should abstain sexually until entering a relationship with a loyal, \u201cpure\u201d and respectful woman.
