Strategies

Leading figures within the manosphere, often referred to as manfluencerManfluencer: Manfluencers are masculinity coaches with a strong social media presence who promote philosophies and services related to manhood.
Central themes include dating, fitness, health, status, wealth and career success. The guiding premise is that men must optimise themselves through the deliberate performance of masculinity in order to achieve fulfilment.
, engage boys and young men at moments of uncertainty about what it means to be male today. By reinforcing the perception that masculinity is under threat, they create strong emotional bonds with their audience.

Suppressing

Emotions

Manosphere messaging offers identity frameworks to young men. Many boys experience insecurity, shame or a sense of threat. Because such emotions are often perceived as “unmanly”, they frequently remain unspoken. In this context, the model of a supposedly natural and dominant masculinity can appear particularly appealing.

Manfluencers often address challenges that genuinely exist, such as difficulties keeping pace with girls in school or anxieties about the future related to artificial intelligence, war or the climate crisis. However, the “solutions” they propose are simplistic and unsustainable. For example, when boys begin to devalue diligence and academic success as “unmanly”, they ultimately limit their own opportunities. The more insecure or socially and economically disadvantaged boys are, the more susceptible they may be to such narratives. At the same time, the manosphere is not a central reference point for all boys and young men. Many demonstrate a strong capacity to critically assess and contextualise manfluencer content. In specialist literature, this competence is described as manfluencer literacyManfluencer literacy: Manfluencer literacy refers to the competence to critically assess and recognise the commercial strategies, aesthetic staging and persuasive techniques used by manfluencers. It includes awareness of how symbolic codes, framing devices and emotional appeals are employed. The concept aligns with media education approaches aimed at strengthening democratic resilience in contexts of social and political change..

A Desire for Empowerment

Idealised masculinity

In a social climate where harmful aspects of patriarchal masculinity are increasingly criticised, many boys lack positive and visible male role models. Manfluencers present patriarchal models as coherent, natural and desirable ideals.

Advocacy

Boys and young men are growing up in a society that promotes the emancipation and advancement of girls and women. This development reflects long-standing structural inequalities. However, without historical context, these changes may be perceived as unfair. Manfluencers position themselves as voices that defend and affirm men. In doing so, they respond to feelings of neglect, while leaving structural causes of gender inequality largely unexamined.

Emotional validation

Manfluencers present themselves as understanding the concerns of male adolescents and young men. They reinforce the perception that men are increasingly disadvantaged, amplify the idea of masculinity under threat and express sympathy for both real and perceived experiences of discrimination. Many young men strongly desire such recognition and affirmation.
